Your guide to various hair removal methods

For centuries, women have been battling excess hair, whether on face, legs, hands, back, bikini area, or anywhere else in the body. Fortunately, now a variety of hair removal methods are available, from the long established waxing and threading to shaving and the more recent laser hair removal, IPL etc. All the available hair removal methods have their own pros and cons. Deciding which technique can give you effective and hassle free hair removal can be daunting.

Let’s try and find out more about some most of the popular hair removal techniques in order to choose an effective and simple technique most suitable for you.

1.Shaving: Shaving is the fastest, simplest and pocket friendly way to remove unwanted hair. A sharp razor is used to cut the hair off at the skin’s surface.

Pain factor: Shaving is generally pain free, but it can be painful if you cut yourself.

Pros: it is an inexpensive way to remove unwanted hair. When done with a right approach, it could be painless and can be helpful for short-term hair removal.

Cons: It can help you get rid of unwanted body hair, but will only keep hair away for few days. Hair come back faster than it would with other techniques. Shaving works best for legs, bikini area and underarms. It is advised not to shave your eyebrows, chin, or upper lip. Also, it is not recommended as the most effective hair removal technique for those with very dark body hair, because you may be able to see the hair root just below the skin even after shaving.

Myth: Shaving causes hair to thicken and makes skin dark.

2.Waxing: It is an established and most popular method in India to remove unwanted hair. After the application of wax, paper strip or cloth is rubbed on the wax and then yanked in the opposite direction of the hair growth to remove the unwanted hair. This method removes the hair from the root. For upper lip or bikini area, thick wax is applied and then peeled off to remove unwanted hair. It is great for people with dark or coarse hair.

Pain factor: The pain factor is high especially when waxing for the first time. Hair growth eventually thins and hence eventually pain is likely to reduce in subsequent attempts.

Pros: Results last a little longer than shaving, because each hair is removed directly by the follicle. Depending on your hair growth and texture, you can enjoy smooth, soft, hair free skin for about 2-8 weeks. It can be pocket friendly depending on whether you take assistance of professional or try it at home.

Cons: Can be painful and messy.

Myth: It removes dead skin and makes skin loose.

3.Threading: Threading as name suggests, involves using a cotton thread. Thread is twisted around individual hairs and then pulled to remove the hairs out at the root. It is generally used for eyebrows or upper lips or other small area of unwanted area especially on the face.

Pain factor: Depending on the sensitivity of the skin, you can experience little or more pain.

Pros: It is a quick process to remove unwanted hair. Generally it takes few minutes to achieve polished, finely shaped brows. It is another relatively inexpensive way to get rid of unwanted hair.

Cons: It is recommended for small areas, and is not a great option to remove body hair. If done inappropriately or hair won’t be pulled from the roots which means hair will reappear sooner.

4.Depilatory creams: These are chemical based creams that remove hair by breaking down the hair structure. The cream is applied to an area of unwanted hair for 5-10 minutes and then removed with a warm washcloth.

Pain Factor: it is a pain free hair removal method

Pros: Depilatory cream will remove hair with less pain than other hair removal techniques. It is a fast process and you can Do-It-Yourself.

Cons: The results of depilatory creams last longer as compared to shaving but not as long as waxing. You can see hair making their appearance again, after a few days, however sometimes it can last for as longer as a week. People also complain about their smell, however, nowadays the fragrance has been improved immensely. It is recommended not to leave these creams on for longer time than recommended on the pack as it could damage the skin. Follow the instructions carefully and try to test in small portion when using for the first time. Some people may experience itching or burning in few hours of its application, so testing is essential.

Myth: It can cause wrinkling or premature aging.

5.Laser hair removal and electrolysis: laser hair removal and electrolysis provides the most lasting results. They provide the closest thing to permanent hair removal available, but for sure, they are not a choice for everyone. ‘Laser’ refers to a strong pulse of light, which means it carries a risk of burns and should only be performed by experienced professionals. In electrolysis a fine needle is inserted into the hair shaft to tear down the hair producing cells.

Pain factor: You can feel a slight uneasiness and discomfort.

Pros: These techniques are often termed as permanent hair removal results can last for months.

Cons: Both laser hair removal and electrolysis can be painful, although, it would be less than waxing. These techniques are not appropriate for all skin types and costs are also high. For darker skin, these techniques are not recommended. Laser hair removal works by shooting a pulse of strong light at a hair follicle, finally damaging the follicle. This can stop or reduce hair growth. However, it is most useful when there is a huge difference between the hair color and the color of the skin.

Myth: It removes hair permanently. And can damage internal organs and systems.

You can choose one of these methods depending on the sensitivity of your skin, hair growth rate, pain tolerance levels and most importantly your budget.
