½ cup Moong dal or Toor dal (split pigeon pea)- anyone can be used

Salt- to taste

1 teaspoon turmeric

1 teaspoon cumin

1 teaspoon chili powder

1 teaspoon ginger garlic paste

2-3 cups chopped spinach

4 cups water

1 tablespoon oil or ghee

A pinch asafoetida



  1.  Wash the lentils and put it in a pressure cooker with water, salt, turmeric, ginger garlic paste and chopped spinach.
  2. Boil it till 1 whistle and then simmer it for a few minutes and switch of the gas- D not try to open the pressure cooker for 20-30 minutes
  3. Prepare the tempering till then- In a small pan, heat ghee.
  4. Add a pinch of asafetida, then cumin, as soon as the cumin starts turning colour switch of the gas and then ad chili powder.
  5. Add the tempering to the boiled dal spinach mixture, adjust water to the required consistency and serve hot.


Serve with rice or chapatti.
