CONGRATULATIONS !!!yourpreganacy test has come positive. You have now completed four weeks of pregnancy. The four weeks are usually counted after your last period date and hence effectively it is only approximately 2 weeks after conception.

Your baby at this stage (4 weeks)

Wonderful developments are taking place in your body right now. You baby currently is simply a ball of cells in your uterus and has likely reached the embryo stage. The embryo is likely to be the size of a mustard seed (Hindi- Raai, राई) right now. The coming five weeks are crucial for your baby’s growth..The placenta is already starting to attach itself to the lining of your uterus. By the end of this week the placenta is likely to be fully functionaland would provide nutrients as well as oxygen to the embryo.

Your symptoms at this stage (4 weeks)

This week would be the first time that you would have an indication that you’re pregnant. One of the early pregnancy symptoms are tender breasts.

Some women also havelight bleeding or spotting around the time of their expected period. This is breakthrough bleeding or implantation bleeding. It is normal, but it is always advised to get any bleeding (during pregnancy) checked by your Doctor.

It is possible that you start to have some nausea at this stage, which is one of the most common pregnancy conditions. Some to-be mothers have severe nausea and vomiting, for some women it is also possible that they are not able to keep anything down and are advised to visit your doctor as soon as possible.

Your life at this stage

If your pregnancy test was negative or inconclusive then you can repeat the test every three days if your period is still late. Many a times it takes about a week after the expected period to see a positive pregnancy test.

Also, if you still have not started taking the required folic acid supplement then you should start taking now. Folic acid helps to avoid neural tube defects in babies as well as other conditions such as spina bifida. The required dosage for the supplement is generally 400 micrograms (mcg), but can vary if you are overweight, as you might need a higher dosage

If you have a sedentary lifestyle and do not exercise, it is advised that you start some form of light exercise as it would help in improving your develop muscle tone and strength. However, it is always advisable to see your Doctor before starting an exercise regimen for the first time, this is even more apt when you are pregnant.

It’s considered natural to gain weight while you’re pregnant, and any form of simple exercise is likely to help you in managing weight issues.. If you are currently overweight, start small with the exercise, for instance you could start with a 15 minute walk around the block and slowly increase the time interval over a period of time.

Your labour still seems a long time away but starting the exercise now will help you to be more fit by the time you reach there and you would appreciate the hard work you have put in over the years. You need to choose a safe and moderate activity instead of any kind of intense routine. Walking, swimming and yoga are the exercises of choice for most pregnant women. However if you choose yoga, do it with a trained pre natal yoga practitioner.

  • Pregnancy could impact your job and hence it is advisable to find out about your health and safety at work, especially if you have a high stress job or you work with chemicals or near any form of radiations such as X-rays.
