You have now completed twenty three weeks of pregnancy.

Your baby at this stage (23 weeks)

Now the baby would be steadily gaining weight. Within her lungs, the blood vessels would be developing to be prepared for breathing. Her lips and tongue are fully formed now and she is also swallowing regularly.Approximately at this timeshe will start to hear. For her the clearest sounds at first would be your heartbeat and other sounds inside your body, maybe your stomach gurgling tummy.

Also around this time she will start making white blood cells which would enhance her immune system and strengthening her ability to fight infections.

Your symptoms at this stage (23 weeks)

Another common pregnancy problem that you could have noticed is slight bleeding of gums while you brush your teeth. The surge in hormones during pregnancy could make your gums swell or become inflamed, which in turn leads to bleeding, even more so while brushing clean your teeth.

To cope with this, what you can do is to brush and floss regularly but very gently. You can also try some natural remedies for bleeding gums. It is important to maintain good dental hygiene during pregnancy to avoid tooth decay and gum diseases. Regular (six monthly or annual) dental check-ups are recommended by most dentists.

Your life at this stage

Your bump will also steadily grow now as the baby grows and it is a good idea to spend some time focusing on your unborn baby. Also, it is totally safe for you or your partner to massage your bump, but you need to be careful and use extremely gentle strokes that simply glide over the contours of your body.

It’s a good way for you and your partner to feel close to the baby, and it is likely that you may feel some kicks in response to the massage strokes.

Important things to keep in mind

  • If you have not informed your employer yet about your pregnancy in writing, you should do it by now. You also need to give your employer the likely date you would go on maternity leave.
  • If your husband is planning to take paternity leave, he should plan and sort it out too.
  • You may also like to start planning the baby’s room, even if the baby will sleep in your room for the first few months.
